The Awakening of Memory
Child Refugees of the Greek Civil War
Based on personal testimonies and historical documents from Riki Van Boeschoten and Loring M. Danforth’s book Children of the Greek Civil War: Refugees and the Politics of Memory.
Children uprooted from their villages. Children living through disaster. Child refugees from Eastern countries. Child refugees living in Queen Frederica’s village d’ enfants. This production is based on historical documents and personal testimonies drawn from Riki Van Boeschoten and Loring M. Danforth’s book Children of the Greek Civil War: Refugees and the Politics of Memory (Alexandria Publications). Children’s narratives form part of a collective experiential narrative, a common story about their violent separation from their families and homes. A unique chorus of aged children comes to life, as they can’t help but remember their ordeal. A performance that seeks to trigger our empathy about the ongoing refugee crisis.
The performance employs photographic material from the Red Cross archives, reprinted in Tasoula Vervenioti’s book Representations of History: The 1940s”.
The performance is scheduled to commence in the outdoor areas of the Agricultural University of Athens and will culminate in the hall of the Agricultural Museum, inside the university.
Arrival time: 19:45, at Gate B of the Agricultural University, where visitors will be divided into groups and the guided tour will commence.
Parking inside the Agricultural University, through Gate A (direction: Elaionas/Egaleo).
The audience is highly recommended to wear comfortable clothes and shoes.
