Musica Aeterna
Works by Kourliandski, Scelsi, Pärt, Purcell

While Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas (one of the founding works of English opera) was not written in the 20th century, it stands as one of the most thrilling modern works in the European repertoire, an endlessly dazzling fusion of music and drama. The Greek conductor Teodor Currentzis, the enfant terrible of the Russian conducting world, is bringing his renown concertante performance to Athens, along with two more recent works that are equally as intense: last year’s unique, almost industrial soundscape by the 31-year-old Kourliandski – winner of the 2003 Gaudeamus competition – and a moving tribute by Scelsi (one of the most original figures in 20th century Italian music) to the tragic loss of the Greek Janis Christou and his wife, Sia.
