Konstantinos Markoulakis

Konstantinos Markoulakis was born in Athens. He graduated from the National Theatre of Greece Drama School in 1991.

At the National Theatre, he played Hamlet in 2004 in a production directed by Michael Cacoyannis and during the summer of that year he played Hippolytus in a production of Euripides’ play directed by Vassilis Nikolaidis, on the 50th anniversary of the Epidaurus Festival. In Epidaurus he played Oedipus in a 2010 production of Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex directed by Spyros Evangelatos, and the roles of Tiresias, Jocasta and the doctor, in a 2012 production of the same play directed by Cesaris Graužinis.

He has also participated, as an actor, in numerous other productions of ancient Greek plays like Euripides’ Phoenician Women directed by Nikos Hourmouziadis, Sophocles’ Philoctetes, directed by Kostas Filippoglou, Aeschylus’ Oresteia directed by Yannis Houvardas, and Vatra – X, an adaptation of Aristophanes’ Frogs, directed by Dimitris Lignadis.

With fellow actor and director Dimitris Lignadis he has also collaborated in the productions of John Fowles The Collector and Marie Jones’ Stones in His Pockets.

As an actor, Markoulakis has participated in numerous theatre productions of plays by Strindberg, Marlow, Marivaux and Gogol among others and collaborated with directors like Vangelis Theodoropoulos, George Kimoulis, Aliki Danezi – Knutsen and more.

In 2007 he founded the Coyot theatre company alongside producer George Lykiardopoulos. The company rented and renovated the Chora theatre and used it as a home for a variety of theatre events. At the Chora theatre, he directed and starred in Patrick Marbers’ Don Juan in Soho.

Since 2012 Markoulakis has directed a number of plays including Bertolt Brecht’s The Caucasian Chalk Circle, Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard, Martin McDonagh’s The Pillowman, Yasmina Reza’s God of Carnage, Connor McPherson’s The Seafarer, David Hare’s Skylight and Tracy Letts’s August: Osage County among others.

In cinema, he has starred in a number of films spanning different genres like Eden is West directed by Costas Gavras, Success Story directed by Nikos Perakis, Cooking Liaisons directed by Vasilis Tselemegos, A Dog’s Dream and The Symptom directed by Angelos Frantzis, Risotto directed by Olga Malea while he has also participated in a number of TV series like Junkermann, The Third Wedding, Word Of Honor, The Life I Didn’t Live, Suddenly, etc.

Markoulakis has a son.
