The first film screening in the history of Epidaurus successfully took place on Saturday, June 30, attracting a large audience, with over 700 people attending the screening of Michael Cacoyannis’ Electra at the Little Theatre of Ancient Epidaurus. The screening was held as part of the 8th Athens Open Air Film Festival, in collaboration with Athens & Epidaurus Festival.
The screening was preceded by an introductory video made by the collaborator of Athens Open Air Film Festival, Panos Genas, and read by music critic Markos Frangos, who described the circular route of Electra: originally a tragedy written by Euripides, it was centuries later adapted into a film, and has now made it back to its birthplace, the ancient theatre.
Loukas Katsikas, artistic director of Athens Open Air Film Festival, thanked the audience for being there, noting that ‘in much the same way that Michael Cacoyannis adapted Electra for the silver screen in this most exemplary manner, we also set out, with as much respect as possible, to convert this ancient theatre into an open air cinema.’
