Cultural dialogues: Chinese theatre and its roots

Chinese theatre has its roots in religious rituals which can be recognized even today during specific events. By the time of the Song dynasty, Chinese theatre had matured and emerged as an independent genre, with various commercial plays written and staged. The reception of the play did not only depend on actors’ performances, but also on music and dance, both of which played a crucial role in how the play was received. In this lecture we will discuss how the Chinese traditional theatre is so specific in form than even after the birth of the Western style theatre it remains almost the same. However, we will also address the changes that have been introduced to it since 1949, significantly contributing to the development of Chinese contemporary theatre.
