Gelsomina
by Pierrette Dupoyet / based on Fellini's “La Strada”

The Athens Festival takes to the road... A van will be drawing a very special caravan, designed by the artist Sokratis Sokratous and fully equipped with its own theatrical stage, around the city.

Olia Lazaridou takes the role of Gelsomina, the title heroine of the play by Pierrette Dupoyet based on Federico Fellini’s famous film La Strada (“The Road”). During the writing of the play, which premièred at the Avignon Festival, Dupoyet worked with the renowned director and his wife, Giulietta Masina, who played Gelsomina in the 1954 film.

The caravan, around and inside which the work is performed, is more than just a stage set: it is the pod, the shell of this wandering spirit whose whole life is passed in transit. While references are made to Fellini’s film, this production seeks to create a fairy tale out of the adventures of this fringe being who, like a female Harry Potter, learns about people and love, good and evil.

The production is aimed at young and old alike, both at the most demanding of theatre-goers and at uninitiated members of the public who, thanks to the Festival Caravan, will be able to discover the world of theatre for the first time.

Performances will take place at various points around the city, as part of the Athens Festival:
