The performance Donald Trump is the Devil by Reverend Billy and The Stop Shopping Choir was held on July 12 at Syntagma Square, meeting with success and taking the crowds by storm. The performance started at the square and ended up at Monastiraki Square via Ermou street.
The NYC-based group of creative activists held a press conference on the stairs of Syntagma Square and announced their crusade to mobilize the largest identity group in the world: tourists.
The first Tourists Against Trump event was popular among locals and visitors, people along the route stopped to cheer, clap and joined in singing, “here we are tourists against trump” and “love, love no border” in Greek and English. At one point a young man jumped on Reverend Billy and smashed his bullhorn to the ground but the march carried on, ending with a concert at Monastiraki Square.
Savitri D, co-founder of Tourists Against Trump, stated the following:
“Until now Tourists have only been acknowledged as an economic variable, a market commodity, whose values are expressed and catered to solely in the form of money. ‘Tourists Against Trump’ ignites the radical potential of this already cohesive global identity group, whose collective worth, voting potential, and constituent strength far exceeds any previously known assembly of humans.
Donald Trump is our first target, as his presidency is little more than a global brand, more insidious and vapid than any other, and more destructive and emblematic of the terrible pressures exerted by capitalism than any other we can think of. He is uniquely opportunistic and preys on the tourist and the migrant with terrible results.
Today we begin the work of organizing this capacity and building a Global Social Movement.”
The performance will be repeated on Friday, July 13.
